We are so excited to be welcoming and getting to know our new residents this autumn! Whether you just moved to your Ames apartment or have been a resident for years, there are many great things to explore and learn about! We hope you love Ames as much as we do!
1. Sports are a big deal in Ames!
On football Saturdays, fans pack Jack Trice Stadium and its 61,500 seats for Big 12 Conference action. The Iowa State’s men’s basketball team has made the NCAA tournament 18 times since 1985. The Cyclones women’s basketball team has made the NCAA tourney 17 times since 1997. Make sure to experience the Hilton Magic at Hilton Coliseum!
2. Enjoy the beautiful Iowa outdoors!
Ames features 37 parks and has over 55 miles of bike routes and trails! There are over 3,000 acres of park lands and natural areas to explore. There are also 4 golf courses, canoeing and kayaking opportunities, and countless fishing spots in Ames. Make sure to spend some time outdoors exploring!
3. No need to worry about finding a good school district!
School rankings don’t get much better than the Ames Community School District, ranked No. 1 in the state for 2018 by a national school analysis site. U.S. News & World Report also ranked Ames among the top five Iowa school districts. If you reside in the Gilbert Community School District, you also have access to a quality education! Gilbert High School boasts a National Blue Ribbon School title while still maintaining a small district feel!
4. Iowa State University has a legacy of cutting-edge research and high-quality state education!
Iowa State is particularly known for excellent agricultural, engineering, and veterinary medicine programs. Over 36,000 students attend ISU, and the university offers over 100 programs and degrees. Education doesn’t get much better than cardinal and gold!
5. The public transportation Cyride system can be your best friend when getting around Ames!
The Cyride system has 13 fixed routes (all are wheelchair accessible and allow service animals), a Dial-A-Ride service for persons with a disability, and a late night service called Moonlight Express. Cyrides are free for anyone with a valid student ID or anyone else can pay a small fee! Check out the Cyride routes HERE.
6. Enjoy some special Iowa wine at Prairie Moon Winery and Vineyards!
They are family owned and operated, and are a groundbreaking Iowa winery. Prairie Moon is the first winery in Iowa to serve wine on tap in their tasting room. They are also the only Iowa winery to make “ice wine” made from grapes harvested immediately after the first frost of the year. If craft beer is more your speed, Alluvial Brewing Co. is located next door.
7. Check out the largest collection of public art at any campus in the United States!
Founded in 1975 by Henry J. and Ann Brunnier, the Brunnier Art Museum is located inside the Iowa State Center on the Iowa State University Campus. Check out the ever changing collection of art at the Brunnier Art Museum or enjoy the numerous paintings, murals, and sculptures across campus!
