7 Tips for When You Move This Summer

Andy Hunziker • July 30, 2019
Popular summer activities can range from swimming, vacations, barbeques, and more, but one of the biggest activities that people all over the U.S. participate in during the summer is moving. While there are many benefits in moving during May through August, the heat can also make the moving process a little more difficult. Read our tips on how to safely and efficiently make your move during a hot summer!

Plan Your Moving Timeline

Life will be a lot easier come moving day if you have your timeline planned out in advance. Figure out when your current lease ends and new one begins, determine how many of your friends and family can help out, and strategize what needs to get moved and when. Having this all written out will give you peace of mind and make an already stressful day more manageable.

Map Out Logistics

Summer is peak season for moving companies. Decide whether it’s in your best interest to hire a moving company to help you out, or if you think you can get by with a pickup truck and some help from willing friends and family. The sooner you determine this, the better, as you don’t want to have to pay outrageous prices or risk not getting moved in time because you’re waiting on availability from a moving company.

Ensure Utilities Are On

The last thing you want is to move into your new apartment without any air conditioning or electricity. Double-check with your utility provider or property manager that everything is completed on your end so you know you’ll have a comfortable apartment when you start moving things in.

Purge Your Belongings With a Garage Sale or Donation

There’s no sense in moving things you don’t need in the blistering heat! Moving is the perfect time to really go through all of your belongings and toss out anything you know you don’t need anymore. Plan out a garage/yard sale with friends or donate to a local Goodwill or Salvation Army and you won’t need to worry about transporting old items to your new home.

Be Mindful of What You Pack

Specific items can get damaged if in the heat for extended periods of time. As you’re packing, think about which items will need special care. They might need to be transported separately or in your own car so you can ensure that they get put into your apartment as soon as possible. These items can include:
Electronics like TVs, computers, DVD players, etc.
  • Candles
  • Perishable food items
  • Plants
  • DVDs and CDs

Beat the Heat & Move in the Morning or Evening

Try your best to avoid doing any heavy lifting and moving during the hottest hours of the day (12 PM - 3 PM). If possible, start moving items early in the morning or much later during the day, so you can work on organizing and putting away items comfortably inside your air-conditioned apartment during the hot afternoon.

Protect Yourself From the Sun

You can’t forget about yourself and your friends/family during move day! Take measures to make sure you’re all safe, protected, and comfortable throughout the moving process.

Stock up on Sunscreen

You’re already going to be sore from the move, don’t be sunburnt too. Protect your skin and use a high SPF!

Dress for Success

Ditch the flip flops and dark-colored clothing. When it comes to moving in the summer, wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing, a hat, sunglasses, and sneakers.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Have plenty of water on hand for everyone helping out! Heatstrokes and dehydration are common when spending extended periods of time outside or while doing physical tasks. Keeping everyone hydrated will help make sure the day goes smoothly.
