Tips for Apartment-Friendly Decorating

Andy Hunziker • August 23, 2017
What a great feeling it is to have a place to call your own! However, it takes a lot of work to make your new apartment really feel like your home. Whatever your style, it is important that your new space suits you and is reflective of your personality. Living in an apartment means that your decorating ideas have to be temporary and it can be difficult to find the right balance between what you want and what your apartment allows. Here are some apartment decorating solutions that will keep both you and your landlord happy!

Can't Paint the Walls?

There are many other ways to add splashes of color or patterns to your new place without painting walls. One is a wall decal, which is essentially a large wall sticker that can be anything from faux wallpaper to a quote you like. You can also use tapestries to help bring color to a wall and cover a large amount of space. If you still want to add color and are open to not touching the walls, finding colorful furniture, rugs, or curtains can help brighten the space and add whatever aesthetic you are going for.

Want to Avoid Putting Holes in the Wall?

While using nails to hang up pictures, shelves, and frames is normally allowed in most apartments, there is often a cost for replacing those holes when it comes time for you to move out. Instead of securing a shelf on the wall, find leaning or standing shelves. Without taking up a lot of space, these shelves can still hold and show off statement items, books, candles, etc. in your home. For pictures and frames, try opting out for adhesive hooks, picture tack, or washi tape, which is a colored adhesive tape that some people even use to make designs on their walls.

Get Some House Plants

One of the easiest decorations that you can add into your apartment is a variety of houseplants. They bring color and fresh oxygen into your home usually without taking up too much space. There are hundreds of different house plants that are good for a variety of spaces ranging from full-sun plants to plants that require little water. If you’re a low-maintenance type of person, you can certainly find some succulents that only need to be watered once a week, or even less. Another idea is to have an edible houseplants of herbs, such as parsley, basil or oregano.

In Ames, there are many garden centers or plant stores, including Ace Hardware, Lowe's and Holub Greenhouses, while Hy-Vee and other grocery stores often have plants as well.

Don't Have a Lot of Storage?

One of the biggest problems people face when living in an apartment is where to find room to pack away all of their belongings without cluttering their apartment. One way to utilize space is to find storage boxes that can slide underneath your bed. This is a good place for things like holiday decorations or out of season clothes that you will not need for an extended period of time. Another option is to use decorative storage boxes. These boxes are able to hold items you need without being an eyesore by matching the patterns or color schemes displayed throughout your apartment. You could also hang shoes, belts, or jewelry in a storage rack behind a door. This helps to remove a lot of items that would take up space in your closet.
